Meghan Markle got candid about her mental health struggles in the most recent episode of her “Archetypes” podcast.
In a conversation with actresses Constance Wu, Jenny Slate and Deepika Padukone, the Duchess of Sussex, 41, discussed how her husband Prince Harry helped her through the “worst point” in her life.
The “Suits” star revealed how Harry, 38, once gave her a referral for a mental health counselor.
“My husband had found a referral for me to call. And I called this woman, and she didn’t even know I was calling her … and she was checking out at the grocery store,” said Markle, without giving details about when this was or specifically why she needed counseling.
“I could hear the little beep, beep … She could hear the dire state that I was in,” she went on. “But I think it’s for all of us to be really honest about what it is that you need and to not be afraid and make peace with that, to ask for it.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Markle talked of being labeled as “insane” and “crazy.”
The mother of two also noted how the word “crazy” is shamelessly “thrown around so casually” and spoke of the “damage it’s wrought on society and women, frankly everywhere.”
“From relationships to families being shattered, reputations destroyed and careers ruined,” Markle said.
The Dutchess made the revelations about her mental health after Padukone, 36, said she once ended up in a “dark place” and went to a friend who was a therapist.
“You just feel hopeless,” the Hindi film star said in the episode, titled “The Decoding of Crazy,” released on Tuesday. “There is this feeling of emptiness and hollowness and hopelessness.”
Markle and the Invictus Games founder spoke up about their mental health issues in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey last year.
The couple had chosen to take a step back from the royal family in January 2020 and they subsequently moved to Montecito, Calif. with their children Lilibet and Archie.
In the chat with the talk show veteran, Markle pointed out how she had suicidal thoughts.
“I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry because of how much loss he suffered,” the former Hollywood starlet explained to Winfrey, 68, at the time.
“But I knew that if I didn’t say it I would do it – because I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” Markle continued. “That was a very clear and real and frightening, constant thought.”
