A 52-year-old father of four has been identified as the person killed after a hit-and-run driver slammed into a crowded sidewalk taco stand in Pomona.
Gilberto Cazares Payan’s name was released Saturday by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office. His goddaughter told ABC7 that Payan was visiting the taco stand, located east of Los Angeles, to pick up dinner Friday night when he was struck and killed in a violent collision that injured a dozen others.
The twelve injured were taken to the nearby hospital, including three in critical condition, while two others were treated at the scene, authorities said.
The driver ran from the car but surrendered about more than an hour later. She was identified as a 26-year-old woman from Pomona but her name wasn’t immediately released. She was booked on suspicion of two felonies –vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, and hit-and-run with death/injury, police said.
Investigators will try to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
