Carson Wentz’s fractured finger leaves his Commanders status up in air

Carson Wentz’s availability for the Washington Commanders is “up in the air.”

That’s according to Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, who report that Wentz suffered a fractured ring finger in Washington’s 12-7 win over the Chicago Bears in a widely panned “Thursday Night Football” matchup.

“The pain was evident for Carson Wentz throughout the game, as he kept his hand covered whenever possible and was spotted trying to loosen it up or make it feel better. Somehow, he finished the game with a fractured finger,” Rapoport tweeted, adding that Wentz is traveling to Los Angeles to see a hand specialist.

Wentz was 12-22 for 99 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions in the snoozer against the Bears.

Washington’s backup quarterbacks are Taylor Heinicke, who started 15 games for the team last year, and Sam Howell, whom Washington selected in the fifth round out of North Carolina in the NFL Draft earlier this year.

It has been a whirlwind week for Wentz. Washington coach Ron Rivera cited the “quarterback” as the reason that the team lags behind the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants in the NFC East before walking back the remarks.

Rivera then lashed out at reporters for asking about a story that said it was embattled owner Daniel Snyder, not Rivera, who wanted Wentz at quarterback.

“Everyone keeps wanting to say I didn’t want to have anything to do with Carson, well bulls–t,” Rivera admonished on Thursday night. “I’m the f–king guy that pulled out the sheets of paper, that looked at the analytics, that watched the tape of the fricken, when we were in Indianapolis. And that’s what pisses me off. Because the young man doesn’t deserve to have that all the time. I’m sorry, I’m done.”

The Commanders are 2-4 and host the Packers next Sunday.
