Russell Wilson will not be playing against the Jets.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Broncos quarterback wanted to play through a hamstring injury but has been ruled out by head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
Instead, it will be Brett Rypien starting for the Denver on Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos’ season is already in danger of coming off the tracks. They are 2-4 and are at the moment 1 1/2-point underdogs at home against the Jets.
Wilson has come off as “robotic,” to the point where his former Seahawks teammate, Michael Robinson, forecasted a “mutiny” in the Broncos’ locker room.
“If you’re a teammate in that locker room, you’re like, be human! Please! Call somebody out! Be upset about something! Don’t just act like this is just business as usual!” Robinson said. “Because at the end of the day, I think it’s on the horizon for this team — I hope it’s not — but I think it’s on the horizon: Mutiny is afoot. The guys in that locker room are gonna turn around and say, ‘Russell got his money. New head coach, he got his money, he’s all good. But what about us? What about the guys in the locker room?’”
Meanwhile, head coach Nathaniel Hackett has persistently struggled with game management.
The 26-year-old Rypien, who is the nephew of former NFL QB Mark Rypien, is in his third season as a backup quarterback with the Broncos after going undrafted out of Boise State. He has appeared in four games in his career and started one game, in 2020, a 37-28 road victory over the Jets.
