Derek Jeter perplexed by Yankees using 2004 ALCS video as motivation: ‘Makes me sick’

Joe Torre and Derek Jeter were on the 2004 team that blew a 3-0 ALCS series lead to the Red Sox, a memory most Yankees fans don’t want to relive.

But it came up again when Aaron Boone said prior to Sunday’s Game 4 of the ALCS against the Astros that Yankees’ director of mental conditioning Chad Bohling sent out a highlight video of that series to the Yankees’ players and coaches.

The idea, it seems, was to convince the current team that such a comeback was possible.

While the concept bothered — or at least confused — many, Jeter and Torre didn’t take issue with it.

“You try anything,’’ Torre said Wednesday at Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation dinner in Midtown. “My guess … is they were trying to show it can be done. Unfortunately, we let [that series] get away from us. Whatever they think is gonna help, I’m all for. You don’t hide from it. We had a 3-0 lead. It’ll always be a sad time for us, but give the Red Sox credit, too.”

Jeter was more perplexed.

“I heard about that,’’ Jeter said of the video being sent out. “I don’t know the context. I still don’t like to talk about [the ’04 ALCS] myself. It makes me sick just thinking about it.”

Whatever the rationale, it didn’t have the desired effect.

The Yankees went out to an early lead in Game 4 against the Astros, but lost the game and were swept out of the playoffs.
