Things just went from bad to worse for the Los Angeles Rams.
Just nine months after winning the Super Bowl, the Rams lost to the Cardinals on Sunday to fall to 3-6 on the season. Now, they will be without their all-world wide receiver, Cooper Kupp, for at least the next four weeks and possibly the rest of the season.
Kupp, last season’s Super Bowl MVP, injured his ankle in Sunday’s loss, after which Rams coach Sean McVay said, “It didn’t look good, and it didn’t sound good.”
The results weren’t good, either.
Kupp, 29, will have surgery on his ankle, the Rams announced Tuesday. He was placed on injured reserve and will be out for at least a month.
The Rams are currently in last place in the NFC West and two games back in the loss column behind the 49ers for the last wild card spot.
With games against the Saints, Chiefs, Seahawks, and Raiders over the next four weeks, the road back to the playoffs was already an uphill one. Losing Kupp makes that climb even steeper.
Kupp’s return isn’t out of the question, though. Tua Tagovailoa had the same Tightrope procedure in 2019 while at Alabama, where he injured his ankle in the SEC Championship. He returned less than a month later.
But the Rams will have to do their part in the meantime for it to be worth bringing Kupp back this season.
