Majority of both parties don’t want Biden or Trump in 2024: poll

Out with the old is what voters in both parties are saying about potential 2024 presidential matchups, according to a new poll.

A majority of registered voters in both the Democratic Party and Republican Party don’t want either President Biden, 80, or former 76-year-old Donald Trump to be their 2024 party standard-bearers, a CNN poll released on Wednesday reveals

Among registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, 62% said they want the GOP to nominate a presidential candidate other than ex-President Trump, who would be 78, in 2024, while 59% of registered Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents said they don’t want Biden, who would be 82 then, on the ticket.

The survey found that 38% of Republicans prefer that the GOP nomination go to Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has not announced candidacy for 2024.

Democrats are far less unified about who they prefer to replace Biden, with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg getting 5% support, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) getting 4%, and Vice President Kamala Harris picking up 3% support. The vast majority of Democrats surveyed, 72%, didn’t have a specific candidate in mind.

Trump announced his third bid for the White House last month in the aftermath of the GOP’s worse-than-expected showing in the 2022 midterm elections.

He is the only Republican so far to announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

A new Quinnipiac University Poll released on Wednesday found that only 31% of registered voters have a favorable view of the former commander in chief, with 59% viewing him unfavorably. It’s Trump’s lowest favorability rating, as measured by Quinnipiac University, since 2015.

DeSantis would likely be Trump’s top rival in the primaries were he to make a run at the White House.

On Wednesday, a Wall Street Journal poll found that the 44-year-old Florida governor, elected to second term in November, leads the former president among Republican primary voters 52% to 38% in a hypothetical matchup.

DeSantis also outpaces Trump in terms of favorability within the party, with 86% of GOP voters viewing the governor favorably compared to 74% for former president.

Biden has said he expects to run for another four years in office but has pushed a final decision back until early next year. He would be 86 years old when he leaves office if he completes a full second term.
