Zach Wilson is one step closer to taking the field again for the Jets.
Wilson will be elevated from inactive third-stringer to the primary backup for starter Mike White this week, head coach Robert Saleh said on Wednesday.
It’s an important decision because White suffered an unspecified ribs injury last week and came out of the game twice, which means the adage about the backup quarterback being just one play away from becoming the starter holds truer than ever.

Saleh said it is a “coincidence” that Wilson is jumping over veteran Joe Flacco at the same time that White is injured. The expectation remains that White will start Sunday against the Lions, but he will be limited in Wednesday’s practice (but practicing during team periods, Saleh said).
Wilson was inactive for the last three games after an ugly 77-yard performance in a loss to the Patriots in Week 11.
