Ohio State student dies during spring break; NJ native was finance major

An Ohio State University student from Westfield, New Jersey, died while the school was on spring break last week.

Henry Meacock’s cause of death was not immediately reported, nor were his whereabouts at the time of his death, according to reports. He was a finance major at the university.

His death came not long after it was reported that University of Georgia senior Liza Burke suffered a brain hemorrhage while vacationing in Mexico. She is now recovering.

Meacock’s devastated sister, Ellie, wrote an emotional tribute to him on Instagram.

“My baby brother, I can’t believe it,” she wrote in a post that has now been set to private. “Words cannot describe how much I miss you. It hurts to breathe without you. You are an extremely special soul that will live on forever. The most beautiful boy inside and out. Nobody will ever have a smile quite like yours.”

The Post has reached out to Meacock’s parents, Will and Colleen, for comment.

“The Ohio State community has suffered a tragic loss, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Henry Meacock,” the university said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this exceptionally difficult time.”

OSU classes are set to resume Monday.

Meacock graduated from Westfield High School in 2021, according to a Facebook post from its boys’ soccer team, which he was a member of before attending Ohio State.

“Our soccer family is heartbroken over this awful news … please keep the Meacock family in your prayers … We send our love and heartfelt condolences,” the team wrote on Facebook.

Spring break scare

Liza Burke, meanwhile, is “making progress toward recovery” after returning to the US, according to a recent report.

Originally from North Carolina, the senior was transported to the Mayo Clinic Florida in Jacksonville on Wednesday after suffering the unexpected arteriovenous malformation, which led to the brain hemorrhage, on Friday.

She was celebrating her last spring break in Cabo San Lucas with friends at the time.

Burke’s mother, Laura McKeithen, told WSB-TV that her daughter, who was placed on life support, was now only on medication for pain and she no longer required a pacemaker.

McKeithen said Burke’s brain pressure had also leveled out.

The student was at breakfast with friends in Cabo San Lucas when she “complained of a headache” and left the table to rest in her room, according to a GoFundMe page created by loved ones.

“A few hours later, her friends called the doctor because they couldn’t wake her,” the page states. Burke was placed on life support shortly thereafter.

Spring break has been somewhat violent this year, especially in Miami Beach, where two people were shot Friday night, one fatally.

Miami Beach Police said two men were shot near Seventh Street and Ocean Drive at about 10:41 p.m., the Miami Herald reported Saturday.

Both were taken to Ryder Trauma Center, where one died. The other victim was in critical condition, police said. One suspect was detained at the scene, Miami Beach Police said, and three guns were recovered. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the person detained was the shooter.

Miami Beach cops, who traditionally blanket the area during spring break, swarmed toward the sound of gunshots as pedestrians crowding sidewalks and Ocean Drive ran to safety.

It is unclear if any spring breaker was involved or hurt in the shootings.

During spring break in 2021 and 2022, the city declared a state of emergency and implemented curfews after shootings, street brawls, stampedes and public indecency terrorized locals.

The Herald reported Saturday that there will not be a curfew after Friday’s gunfire.
