They’re coming home, they’re coming home, tell the world, they’re coming home.
It feels like a while since the Mets have been home in Queens.
A 7-3 West Coast trip is finally over and the Mets should be thrilled.
A 14-9 record with all the injuries, a Max Scherzer 10-game suspension, and David Peterson pitching terribly… is quite impressive.
The fans now get seven games in seven days to enjoy against last-place and first-place NL East foes in the Nationals and Braves.
To talk about everything going on in Mets land, we bring you a new episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with former Mets pitcher Nelson Figueroa and me.
Figgie announces on the pod that he will be working with PIX11 this season as he is back on TV.
Amazin’ But True Podcast with Jake Brown & Nelson Figueroa:
- 7-3 WEST COAST TRIP: Sunday was a frustrating end to the trip, but you will sign up for 7-3 on the West Coast any day of the week. They should be satisfied that they are still 14-9 and playing well despite all the injuries right now. The Mets finally return home for a seven-game homestand.
- DREW SMITH & THE BULLPEN: Drew Smith in a tie game in the eighth inning was a tough way to go down, but they believe in Smith and in a tie, did not want to use Adam Ottavino. It’s been difficult to have complete faith in Smith in big spots. He will need to prove himself the first few months. Jeff Brigham has looked really good in his first four innings this year in relief. His sweeper is nasty and he’s got a ton of confidence. Brooks Raley has been great outside one inning this season so far.
- THE ROTATION: Joey Lucchesi filled in nicely in his return on Friday, pitching in front of family and friends in San Francisco. The churve is a thing of beauty. He could be a pivotal piece at least in the short term with Max Scherzer missing two starts due to his 10-game suspension and Verlander still being another 7-10 days away. David Peterson could be on his way out of the rotation when the two aces return due to his brutal starts. Peterson has been inconsistent so far, but should at least get one or maybe two more starts before the Mets use Lucchesi over him.
- STICKY SITUATION: Was MLB right in suspending Max Scherzer for 10 games? I think it’s a joke. He said he used sweat and rosin, which is legal. One umpire in Phil Cuzzi having an issue and calling the shots here is insanity. Scherzer was smart to not appeal and delay this. He could use the rest on his back anyway, but it’s just another obstacle these Mets are having to climb in what could truly end up being a Mets against the world kind of year. Francisco Alvarez has struggled, but finally hit a home run Sunday. Fans need to have patience with Alvarez. It’s only been seven starts this year. He needs a bit more time to start hitting.
- FIGGIE’S NEW JOB: Nelson Figueroa announces on the pod that he will be working with PIX11 this season as he returns to your TV sets. He will announce more about the role in the coming weeks on the show.
- NELSON FIGUEROA SPANISH ACADEMY: Figgie teaches me how to say “sweat and rosin,” “10-game suspension” and “sticky substance” in Spanish. I get a B- in this class, which is probably my best grade at the academy ever.
