White House fumbles question over whether Biden will serve full 2nd term: ‘That’s something for him to decide’
The White House press secretary appeared unsure about whether President Biden would complete a full second term when asked about the 80-year-old Democrat’s plans during a Tuesday press briefing.
While speaking at the podium, Karine Jean-Pierre initially didn’t commit to a firm answer on whether Biden planned to serve all eight years.
But she quickly clarified over social media that the president would complete the full term in the Oval Office if he clinches reelection.
Biden officially announced his bid for a second term Tuesday morning.
“I’m not, I’m just not gonna get ahead of the president,” Jean-Pierre said.
“That’s something for him to decide. I’m just not gonna get ahead of it.
“There’s 2024 campaign, anything related to that I would refer you to that”
After Jean-Pierre’s answer from the podium created a stir on social media, she walked back her remarks in a tweet Tuesday afternoon.
“As you know, we take following the law seriously. So I wanted to be sure that I didn’t go into 2024 more than is appropriate under the law,” Jean-Pierre said in a statement in reference to the Hatch Act that prohibits federal employees from taking part in political activities on the job.
“But I can confirm that if re-elected, @POTUS would serve all 8 years.”
Biden, already the oldest president to ever serve, would be 86 at the end of his second term in office.
Biden will run again with Vice President Kamala Harris.
Days before his formal announcement Tuesday, an NBC News poll released Sunday indicates that 70% of Americans did not want Biden to run again.
