New McDonald’s drive-thru feature has customers feeling ‘exposed’
A new feature at McDonald’s drive-throughs has divided customers after many claimed it “exposed” their fast-food habits.
The popular burger chain introduced a personalized greeting on the digital screens at drive-thru kiosks in December which welcome customers who order through the MyMacca’s [Australian McDonald’s app] app by name.
Gold Coast influencer Jasmine Hand recently discovered the new McDonald’s feature while buying food at a drive-thru and shared her shock on TikTok.
“Can someone tell me when this became a thing at Macca’s [McDonald’s] because I feel like I’ve been exposed,” she said in a video.
The clip, filmed in her car while she waited for her order to be fulfilled, then spanned to show the message appearing on the large digital screens.
It read: “Great to see you Jaz.”
“Why does it say my name dude?” she then asks.
Jaz’s video quickly garnered attention, with many agreeing they thought it gave away their fast-food habits, as others stated they loved the “personal touch.”
Those on team “no way” argued the feature was “weird.”
“I ordered a coffee through drive-thru and it came up and I freaked out,” one said.
“I’m going to stop going to Macca’s [McDonald’s] if I’m going to get called out like that,” another agreed.
As someone else wrote: “This happened to me the other day and I nearly died.”
However, others thought it left them feeling “special” every time they visited McDonald’s.
“I’m going to deliberately go to Macca’s [McDonald’s] tomorrow to see if my name comes up…” one viewer declared.
“You should change the name on your app to ‘Beautiful’ so at Macca’s [McDonald’s] it will say ‘Great to see you Beautiful’. Then Macca’s are giving you a compliment.”
While one added: “It did it to me and I felt special LOL.”
One McDonald’s employee explained: “We could always see your names on our register and we were supposed to actually say your name but we all thought it was weird.”
“Mine keeps coming up with random names,” one chipped in.
“OMG the first time I saw this I was so embarrassed,” another lamented.
For those who aren’t fans of the new personalized feature, there is a way to switch it off.
“We know not all customers will appreciate the personalized greeting so we’ve made it a feature that MyMacca’s customers can opt out of by going to their settings in the app,” a spokesperson for the fast-food giant told news.com.au.
Customers can use the app to earn MyMacca’s Rewards, which lets you earn points for every dollar spent on eligible food and drink purchases via the app, redeemable on a range of menu favorites.
