Hunter College’s bizarre hire: Letters to the Editor — May 29, 2023

The Issue: An ex-CUNY professer who attacked a reporter after harassing pro-life students on campus.

The Hunter College website states it has recruited distinguished faculty (“Knuckle head,” May 26).

Is Shellyne Rodriguez one of the “distinguished faculty” recruited?

I proudly graduated from Hunter in 1977. I went on to a distinguished career with the New York City Police Department, retiring in the rank of lieutenant.

My Bachelor of Arts psychology degree from Hunter enabled me to be an effective instructor in the New York City Police Academy. Instructors were required to have a college degree as per state accreditation requirements, and I was proud to submit mine from Hunter.

How can Hunter College of the City University of New York allow such a person as Shellyne Rodriguez to cross the threshold of such an institution, one rightly called the “crown jewel” of the CUNY system?

This letter is in response to the terrible actions by Professor Shellyne Rodriguez.

I am a loyal employee of CUNY for 41 years. We all try to work together and provide equality and inclusion for all students regardless of race, religion or national origin.

Unfortunately, CUNY is having difficulty enforcing these items.

If there is a controversial event on campus, public safety officers should be called in to maintain peace and harmony. Why Hunter College did not have public safety when the anti-abortion exhibit was being shown is a mystery to me. That is bad judgment on their part.

I hope CUNY reinvents and tries to reestablish the traditions and free education for all that we had since 1848.

Next week, when I teach my macroeconomics classes, I will be sure to talk about freedom of speech and how it relates to the US economy.

We all have a say in the class, no matter how outrageous the remarks can seem. No one is bullied or harassed.

What has become of our colleges? Who are these schools hiring to teach our young people?

If you don’t believe in a woke dogma, then you may be attacked.

How could any school retain a person like Shellyne Rodriguez?

These progressive phonies who claim to be against violence and for equal rights for all, apparently only mean their rights to use a machete against a journalist. Enough.

With a wealth of talent to choose from (in the form of unemployed PhD holders), it is amazing that Hunter — which is the “crown jewel” of the City University system — managed to hire a loon.

This is a woman who believes that pro-lifers and anyone who dares to disagree with her distorted view of the world should be subjected to violence and harassment — including newspaper reporters whom she threatened with a machete.

I can’t even begin to imagine the shenanigans that went on in her classroom. Who vetted this woman, and why was she even hired?

CUNY receives our tax dollars and we are owed an explanation for this bizarre hire.

This is just unbelievable. Shellyne Rodriguez, who threatened a reporter by holding a machete to his throat, also has anti-police tattoos on her knuckles.

Yet, she was hired as an adjunct professor at Hunter, one of the most prestigious colleges in New York.

When she was interviewed for the job, didn’t that person who interviewed her notice those anti-police tattoos on her hand? Something like that should send up red flags that this person could be bad news.

I think Hunter College should check on those people who interviewed her for the job. This should have never happened. Where is our society going?

Shellyne Rodriquez is a predictable lunatic, created by unchecked progressive ideology.
