A harrowing scene unfolded with 16 laps to go during the Indy 500 on Sunday when one of Kyle Kirkwood’s tires flew into the stands during a collision with the wall.
The tire was headed for the grandstands and barely missed hitting fans in the section.
No one was hurt by the tire, but IndyCar said one person was injured by debris from the crash.
The person was checked out at the infield care center and released, according to WRTV.
The tire ended up in a parking lot where a white Chevrolet was damaged, and the race was immediately halted with a red flag after the crash that also involved Felix Rosenqvist.
Driver Kyle Kirkwood was also flipped upside down in the accident as he turned over against the wall.
There were no reported injuries as a result of the crash.
“All I know is I was up in the fence, which is never a good thing in IndyCar. Thank God these cars are so safe,” Kirkwood said, via the Associated Press. “I saw sparks flying everywhere. That’s the scary part. You’re upside-down and you’re kind of stuck at that point.”
Rosenqvist slid after touching the fence in Turn 1.
Josef Newgarden won the Indy 500, overtaking defending champion Marcus Ericsson in the last two laps after a restart.
