Connecticut man allegedly drowned mom in river to ‘keep demons away’
A Connecticut man allegedly confessed to drowning his mother in a park river earlier this week in a 911 call — telling the dispatcher he was forced to do it to “keep the demons away,” chilling audio of the call shows.
Eric Meagan, 34, was arrested and charged on Monday after he called cops to say he had just killed his 56-year-old mom, Victoria Palmer, in the Harrybrooke River in New Milford, police said.
“My mom’s dead. I killed her,” Meagan allegedly told the dispatcher in the 911 call.
“Yeah, I had to. I had to do it to keep the demons away.”
The son allegedly admitted to police that he dragged his mom into the river Monday morning and held her underwater for roughly 10 minutes until she stopped moving.
About 30 minutes later, Meagan called 911 to calmly report his alleged crime.
“How did you kill her?” the dispatcher could be heard asking.
Meagan responded: “In the water.”
Asked if he was still hearing the demons, Meagan told the dispatcher: “I was feeling them.”
“I’m not feeling them now that she’s dead,” he added. “The demons have been constantly plaguing me.”
Meagan, who stayed on the phone for several minutes as he described the slaying, was taken into custody a short time later after giving police his exact location along the river.
His mom was pulled from the water and rushed to the nearby New Milford Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The son later told cops he had been having a “hard time for the past couple of weeks” and that he had sought help for mental health issues.
It wasn’t immediately clear if he was undergoing treatment at the time of his mom’s slaying.
Meagan was slapped with a murder charge and is being held on a $2 million bond.
His next court appearance is set for July 11.
