Mayor Eric Adams signs pro-LGBTQ+ measure to protect NYC transgender healthcare
Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order Monday protecting transgender individuals and “gender-affirming health care” in New York City.
The order, signed in celebration of Pride Month, is to protect access to transgender care and prevent the use of city resources to detain any individual who is providing or receiving gender-affirming health care services in New York City,” said City Hall in a statement.
“As states across the nation continue their onslaught of attacks on our LGBTQ+ neighbors, New York City is doing what we have always done — standing up for justice and against discrimination,” said Adams in a statement.
Gender-affirming care refers to medical, surgical, mental health, and non-medical services for transgender and nonbinary people, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Right-wing lawmakers across the country are waging a war against the LGTBQ community, and their number one target is trans kids,” said state senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal. “New York City reaffirms its role as a beacon for the LGBTQ community.”
Nearly 20 states have denied access for transgender youth and some restrictions to care for non-binary adults, as well, according to ABC News.
The New York State Education Department also released guidelines on Monday to provide a school setting that is supportive for transgender and gender expansive (TGE) students said Commissioner Betty A. Rosa in a statement.
The Human Rights Campaign – the largest LGBTQ advocacy group – declared a state of emergency earlier this month in response to an increase in the number of anti-gay legislation and laws passed nationwide.
