The Giants took care of an opening at running back Friday, with disgruntled Saquon Barkley not expected to report to camp, angered that he will have to play on the franchise tag of $10.1 million after no long-term deal was reached.
So the Giants signed James Robinson, who was a sensation not long ago and a washout in 2022.
Robinson, 24, was undrafted out of Illinois State and won the starting job with the Jaguars in 2020.
He rushed for 1,070 yards, becoming only the fourth undrafted NFL player to surpass 1,000 rushing yards as a rookie.
His 1,414 yards from scrimmage were the most by a rookie in league history.
He tore his Achilles against the Jets in Week 16 of the 2021 season.
He was traded to the Jets last October after rookie Breece Hall tore his ACL and did not play mush, with only 29 rushing attempts in four games.
In March, Robinson signed a two-year, $4 million contract (none of it guaranteed) with the Patriots, but lasted only four months before he was released.
The Giants are Robinson’s fourth team in less than a year.
He will join Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, rookie Eric Gray and Jashaun Corbin to provide summer depth in a backfield devoid of Barkley.
