Giants rookie Deonte Banks gets his NFL wake-up call against Darren Waller
Observations from Sunday’s Giants practice.
Gotta hand it to him
A couple of one-handed catches — by third-string tight end Lawrence Cager and by starting safety Jason Pinnock — drew gasps from the fans. Pinnock’s highlight was in coverage against Darren Waller on the final play of practice. The officials blew the play dead for a “sack” just before a scrambling Daniel Jones threw the ball to the end zone and Pinnock skied for the catch. The offense had to run a sprint for losing that rep.
Rookie wall
It was a “Welcome to the NFL” wake-up call day for rookie cornerback Deonte Banks, who was no match for the veteran tight end Waller. Banks missed a jam on Waller and allowed an easy touchdown in one-on-one reps, got too close, then allowed Waller to spin out of his grasp for a catch-and-run in team drills, and finally was put in a blender by Waller’s quickness on an out-route.
Caught my eye
Tyre Phillips was the starting left guard during team periods, so make that four competitors — along with rookie center John Michael Schmitz, guard Josh Ezeudu and center/guard Ben Bredeson — for the two open starting jobs on the offensive line. Phillips started five games at right tackle for the Giants last season but previously played some guard for the Ravens.
Injury Report
WRs Jamison Crowder (non-football injury list, calf) and Sterling Shepard (Physically Unable to Perform list, knee) were activated before practice. WR Cole Beasley and safety Gervarrius Owens returned to practice. DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches was on the field in a limited fashion as he nears clearing the concussion protocol. TE Ryan Jones (knee) and OLB Jihad Ward (undisclosed) did not practice due to minor injuries, head coach Brian Daboll said.
