The US Women’s National Team may have just lost its chance to win the World Cup — after superstar Megan Rapinoe missed a penalty kick to Sweden — but the American soccer legend already won a long time ago, elevating the game and raising spirits for fans everywhere.
Back on the home front, meanwhile, Rapinoe is also a winner with a flashy New York residence that she’s now showing off to her admirers.
For Elle Decor’s September Style issue, Rapinoe and her basketball star partner Sue Bird, a former WNBA player, opened the doors of their Soho pied-à-terre in the magazine’s cover feature.
As the images show, the perch — this home being the first that the couple purchased together — dazzles with high design.
The outlet reported that Rapinoe messaged interior and furniture designer Mark Grattan on Instagram in 2021, saying that the pair needed “HALP!” for the two-bedroom, 1,650-square-foot unit. In the end, Grattan worked his magic.
“Thankfully they trusted me and the process,” said Grattan, who’s based in New York and Mexico City.
Most of all, the result is a homecoming of sorts for the power couple, who live in Seattle — as Bird, like Grattan, is from New York.
The loft-like space, in a new construction high-rise building, comes with an open chef’s kitchen and features a merging of textures and shapes — including a freestanding bent mirror behind the living room’s custom sectional sofa and a cocktail table. Grattan designed it all.
Grattan’s clients also include Solange Knowles, as he consults for her creative firm, Saint Heron.
The dwelling’s aesthetic, Grattan told Gimme Shelter, “was about being playful and taking risks. Sophisticated, but not sterile. It was a lot of balance. I’m always looking for opportunities to turn the volume up, but not too high.”
