The Captain himself will headline the Yankees’ Old-Timers Day.
Derek Jeter is slated to make his first appearance at the Sept. 9 outing, though fans hoping to see him stationed at shortstop once again will be left wanting.
While the 75th Old-Timers Day will commemorate the anniversary of the 1998 World Series-winning team, there will be no game played — instead, ex-Bombers will take part in a roundtable Q&A discussion led by Yankees announcers Michael Kay, Suzyn Waldman and John Sterling.
Still, the day will feature traditional introductions and 29 members of the ’98 club, as well as nine Monument Park inductees: Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Joe Torre, Ron Guidry, Tino Martinez, Paul O’Neill, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Willie Randolph.
Manager Aaron Boone, 1978 playoff hero Bucky Dent and 2009 World Series MVP Hideki Mastui will join the festivities, as well as ex-Yankees and current YES broadcasts David Cone and Jeff Nelson.
The celebration will also include the widows of four Yankees legends: Diana Munson, widow of Thurman Munson; Joan Ford, widow of Whitey Ford; Kay Murcer, widow of Bobby Murcer; and Jill Martin, widow of Billy Martin.
Jeter, making his Old-Timers Day debut, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020 after being named on 396 of the 397 ballots.
His career included five World Series titles, five Gold Gloves, five Silver Slugger awards, the 1995 American League Rookie of the Year award and 14 All-Star Games.
He is the all-time franchise leader in games played (2,747), hits (3,465), singles (2,595), doubles (544) and stolen bases (358).
Many ex-Yanks were disappointed not to get a chance to play in pinstripes in 2022, when the team did not host an actual game due to a lack of star power.
“I think it’s cool,” Boone said of the abandonment of the traditional game last year. “I haven’t played in the game, but I’ve gone out there and taken [batting practice] a couple years. That’s fun — to get in a group with the Old Timers and take BP like you used to do it. Hopefully some form or fashion of that returns as we strive to get to more normal and more normal.”
