Giants’ Tommy Sweeney ‘good’ after being carted off field for ‘medical event’

One day after tight end Tommy Sweeney was carted off after experiencing a “medical event” during practice, the prognosis from Giants coach Brian Daboll sounded cautiously optimistic.

“He’s good,” Daboll said ahead of the last practice of training camp on Thursday. “He’s still going through some evaluations. Not going to get into anything specific. … He’s still going through some stuff.”

Sweeney was in the building Thursday morning, though Daboll declined to say whether he was hospitalized after leaving practice Wednesday.

He also did not say whether the event had anything to do with an undisclosed injury Sweeney was dealing with prior to Wednesday.

In 2020, Sweeney missed the entire season after being diagnosed with myocarditis related to a COVID-19 diagnosis.

Sweeney was carted off the field after falling to the ground while working with a trainer on Wednesday and not getting up.

He has been fighting for a roster spot with fellow tight ends Lawrence Cager, Ryan Jones and Chris Myarick.

Daboll talked with the team about the event following Wednesday’s practice.

“I just wanted everyone to know he was fine,” Daboll said. “He was in the training room. His dad was actually in the crowd. … He was doing OK. I don’t want to say he [is] OK, because I’m not a physician but I saw him this morning.

“He was walking around, he was doing fine. I just want to let everyone know he’s in good spirits and he’s doing OK.”

Daboll said the team will vote on captains after the roster is cut down to 53 men next week.

Cole Beasley (leg) practiced Thursday, but was limited.

Tyre Phillips was a full participant.

Marcus McKethan, Parris Campbell, Darrien Beavers, Darren Waller and A’Shawn Robinson also participated after taking veteran rest days.

Sterling Shephard and Dexter Lawrence both took rest days and sat out on Thursday.

Nick McCloud and Cor’Dale Flott (abdominal) are both day-to-day.

Daboll declined to address when the Giants will bring Wan’Dale Robinson (knee) off the PUP list.

“I think there’s a lot of things that go into play with it,” he said. “If we feel that he’s ready from the rehab process to come out there and start practicing, then we’ll make our decision off of that.

“We’re still a few days out [from cut day] — I know it’s a few days away — but we’ll take it right up to probably when we need to take it to.”
