16-year-old dies after shooting at Oklahoma high school football game

A 16-year-old male died after a shooting at a high school football game in Choctaw, Okla., on Friday while at least three others were injured, police said in a statement Saturday.

The victim was not a student at either Choctaw or Del City, the two schools competing in the game, Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall said.

Police did not specify if he died at the scene or at the hospital.

There have been no arrests made, but there is a person of interest in the case.

“It is believed an argument started between at least two males which led to the shooting,” Marshall said, per The Associated Press.

“Two guns and eight rounds were recovered at the scene.”

When gunfire rang out around 10:15 p.m. Friday at Bill Jensen Field at Choctaw High School, chaos ensued as players and fans both ran for safety.

One 42-year-old male is in stable condition at a nearby University of Oklahoma hospital after he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound near his chest, according to KFOR.

Marshall said a “young female” was treated for a wound in her thigh and released.

Two others who fled the scene also suffered broken bones, per Marshall.

“Last night’s event in Choctaw is tragic,” Oklahoma state superintendent Ryan Walters said in a statement in the wake of the shooting. “Violence of any kind has no place at our school events, and anyone who would threaten our kids must be brought swiftly to justice.”

Two off-duty Del City officers, who were providing security for that team, were present while the shooting unfolded.

One of them fired his weapon, Del City Police Chief Loyd Berger said.

“Let me be clear, violence will not be tolerated in Oklahoma. I am deeply thankful to the Choctaw and Del City officers who responded quickly and saved lives,” Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said in a statement.

“My office is in contact with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and Choctaw law enforcement and we’re monitoring the situation.”
