16-year-old student killed in shooting at Louisiana high school football game

A student was killed and another victim injured when gunfire erupted during a high school football game in Louisiana.

The shooting broke out Friday during halftime near the audience stands at Port Allen High School’s football field, according to the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Two people were struck by bullets: a 16-year-old male student and a 28-year-old woman.

A medical helicopter landed on the field and rushed the two victims to the hospital, where the teen was pronounced dead.

The woman was treated for non-life-threatening injuries to her arm.

Police have not made any arrests and have no leads for the violence.

“We don’t know what led up to the event and we don’t yet know if it was a targeted shooting or random,” Sgt. Landon Groger said. “We want to take our time and cover this from all angles.”

According to the West Baton Rouge School Board, the mysterious shooting happened in spite of increased security stationed for the school’s second game of the season.

The game against nearby Brusly High School was suspended in a 13-13 tie.

Port Allen officials announced it would bulk up security during the school day in the wake of the tragedy.

“We have on going programs in our schools that teach students ways to resolve disputes with their peers. We will re-double those efforts and work with the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and others in the coming months to teach our students that violence destroys many people’s lives,” Superintendent Chandler Smith said in a statement to parents.

“Our prayers are with everyone touched by this tragedy. In times like these, our entire community grieves. By loving and supporting each other, we will get through it.”

The tragedy comes just one week after a 16-year-old boy was killed and three others injured during a shooting at an Oklahoma high school football game.

Police believe guns were drawn after an argument started between at least two males in the stands.

Shocking video shows the moment gunfire erupted, sending players and spectators scrambling for safety.
