A teenage suspect was arrested in the shooting of a security guard who was blasted in the head while breaking up a fight at a high school football game in New York over the weekend, police announced.
The suspect, a 16-year-old boy, turned himself in to police Sunday after he was identified through numerous videos of the shooting at Thomas R. Proctor High School, the Utica Police Department said.
Police said the teen was not a student at the Utica high school but was enrolled in “an alternative educational program.”
His name has not been released as he is underage, and police said they seeking to prosecute him as an adult.
The teenager faces charges of attempted murder in the second degree, along with several weapons offenses.
Police said other individuals may also be charged in the incident.
The shooting happened just after 4 p.m. on Saturday after a group had been turned away from the varsity football game against nearby Binghamton High School.
The group of about a dozen people began brawling outside the football field and a pair of security guards rushed in to intervene, footage from the incident showed.
Two shots then rang out, and one of the guards collapsed to the ground with a gunshot wound to the back of the head, cops said.
He was rushed to the hospital in critical but stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery, according to police.
Investigators have not disclosed an official motive for the initial fight, but police said it could have been gang-related.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The gunfire was the latest shooting at a high school football game.
Just last week, a student was killed and a woman injured after shots were fired at halftime during a game in Louisiana.
An 18-year-old was arrested in that shooting.
In August, a 16-year-old was also killed when shots erupted from the stands at an Oklahoma football game.
