It’s finally happening.
David Stearns will reportedly become the Mets president of baseball operations when the regular season ends.
We knew this would potentially be coming, but it was not definitive. Now, it is.
The Mets get themselves one of the highest-regarded, young front office executives in baseball.
This team has badly needed that lead baseball voice in the front office that has had plenty of turnover in the past couple years.
Stearns will give the Mets stability they desperately need.
To react to the Stearns news, we bring you an emergency episode of the “Amazin’ But True” podcast with me and Mets beat writer Mike Puma.
‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast with Jake Brown & Mike Puma:
- STEARNS REACTION: This is a new era for the Mets. They bring in a guy who grew up in New York, a Mets fan and has been with the organization before. It’s a home-run hire and a no brainer.
- BILLY EPPLER: Expected to still be the GM, but Stearns will have final say on decisions. It will be a collaborative effort.
- BUCK SHOWALTER: Will Stearns keep Buck around for next season? Does he bring in his guy Craig Counsell?
- FUTURE OF THE METS: They are in good hands with Stearns. People say he’s the smartest guy in the room when he walks in. He made the Brewers a playoff team year after year. He’s made several moves to bolster the big league roster and the farm system.
