Trump scores eye-popping 10-point lead over Biden in new poll

Donald Trump scored an explosive 10-point lead over President Biden in a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The 77-year-old former president trounced the Democrat 52% to 42% in a hypothetical rematch of the 2020 contest, up significantly from Trump’s 49% to 43% lead during a similar survey from the outlets in May.

“Heads are EXPLODING at the Jeff Bezos Amazon Washington Post, as President Trump now leads Biden nationally by 10,” senior Trump adviser Jason Miller boasted on X.

During the 2016 election Trump clinched about 46% support and during 2020, he nabbed just shy of 47% support.

Across the board, the poll spelled bad news for Biden, with voters souring on his stewardship of the economy, immigration, age, and more.

Biden’s campaign and administration have boasted about the progress of so-called “Bidenomics,” but 44% surveyed in the poll argued that their financial picture deteriorated under his watch.

Only 30% look favorably on his handling of the economy, while 37% approve of his performance overall, compared to 56% who disapprove, per the poll.

On immigration, Biden’s approval clocks in at 23%, with 45% strongly disapproving.

Then, a considerable 74% of voters feel that he’s too old for another term, while about 50% say the same about Trump.

At age 80, Biden is already the oldest sitting US president and would be 86 by the conclusion of a second term in office.

A majority of Americans, including Democrats, have told pollsters that he is too old for another term.

Trump, who would also be the oldest president ever in office if he served a full second non-consecutive term, also leads Biden by one point nationally in the latest RealClearPolitics polling aggregate.

The Washington Post described its own poll as an “outlier,” pointing out that a myriad of surveys show a much tighter race.

An NBC News poll released Sunday had Trump and Biden dead even at 46% apiece. Biden had a 49% to 45% lead over Trump in an NBC poll from June.

Some of Trump’s rivals fared better than him against Biden, such as presidential hopeful Nikki Haley, who dispatched the incumbent president 46% to 41%, according to the survey released Sunday.

Overall, respondents pegged concerns about both candidates, with 74% uneasy about Biden’s age, and 62% fretting about Trump’s legal perils.

The NBC poll was taken from Sept. 15–19 among 1,000 registered voters nationally with a 3.1 percentage point margin of error.

Both Biden and Trump are overwhelmingly leading their respective party’s primary contests to be the standard bearer in 2024.

Some of Trump’s Republican rivals have openly cast doubt on whether he could take down Biden in the 2024 general election, considering his defeat last time around.

For example, allies of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) have cited a WPA Intelligence Poll showing Biden dispatching Trump 45% to 39%, if he were convicted of any of the 91 felony charges he faces across four criminal cases.

Trump’s approval rating is also less underwater than Biden’s in the ABC-Washington Post poll. Forty-eight percent of respondents approve his Trump’s performance in office, compared to 49% who disapproved, according to the poll.

That’s up from 38% approval in January 2021 and 60% disapproval.

Another nugget from the ABC-Washington Post survey is that 40% indicated they would primarily blame Democrats and Biden for a government shutdown, while 33% would blame Republicans.

This is notable, because historically, a torrent of polling has shown Republicans bearing the brunt of the blame for shutdowns in the past.

The ABC-Washington Post poll was conducted from Sept. 15-20 among 1,006 adults with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

It featured a partisan split of 25% Democrats, 25% Republicans, and 42% Independents.
