Matt Ryan is not riding in on a shiny white horse to try to save the Jets.
After Zach Wilson averaged 4.4 yards per attempt in a 15-10 loss to the Patriots on Sunday, the masses are starting to wonder if perhaps the Jets’ commitment to the former second overall NFL Draft pick would be shorter than head coach Robert Saleh has been publicly communicating.
Ryan, the 38-year-old former quarterback of the Falcons and Colts, is now a color commentator for CBS, and was asked on CBS Sports HQ on Monday if any part of him would be interested in potentially joining the Jets.
“No, not on my end,” Ryan answered.
He mentioned all the fun he is having in the CBS booth.
“I’m really enjoying what I’m doing working with Andrew [Catalon], Tiki [Barber] and A.J. [Ross],” Ryan said. “They’re been fun to work with.”
There was a Fox Sports report on Sunday that said both Ryan and Carson Wentz had reached out to the Jets about a potential opening.
Ryan continued to say that his agent “wouldn’t be doing his job if he wasn’t looking into certain situations” but reiterated that “I’ve got no interest in doing that right now.”
His performance for the Colts last season was not especially enticing.
He threw 14 touchdown passes to 13 interceptions, and averaged 6.6 yards per attempt as the Colts went 4-7-1 in games he started.
While Ryan hasn’t officially retired from the NFL, Pro Football Talk reported that Ryan has to keep his NFL options open to collect the $12 million the Colts owe him.
Wilson was foisted into the starting quarterback role after Aaron Rodgers suffered a likely season-ending Achilles injury just four snaps into the season against the Bills in Week 1.
Saleh has outwardly maintained that Wilson remains the Jets’ starting quarterback even after his poor performance Sunday.
