Yankees win home finale in conditions fitting of disappointing season
A cold, wet, miserable afternoon was perhaps a fitting way for the Yankees to close out their home schedule in a disappointing season, but they did manage to beat Arizona, 6-4.
It came a day after the Yankees were officially eliminated from playoff contention for the first time since 2016, when maybe a thousand sturdy fans showed up — although the announced crowd was 41,096, since it was a makeup of Saturday’s game that included an Aaron Judge bobblehead giveaway.
The Yankees came back and took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the eighth.
Gleyber Torres and Austin Wells led off with singles and Anthony Volpe followed with a walk to load the bases with no one out.
After Oswaldo Cabrera struck out, Oswald Peraza walked to force in a run and tie the game.
Estevan Florial gave them the lead with a sacrifice fly.
A run-scoring single by Everson Pereira made it a two-run game and Clay Holmes pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
Clarke Schmidt allowed two runs in four innings before Greg Weissert tossed a pair of scoreless innings.
Arizona scored both runs off Schmidt in the first on a two-run double by Alek Thomas.
The Yankees tied the game with a two-run homer from Wells in the fourth.
It was Wells’ second homer in the majors, as the lefty-hitter blasted a shot into the bleachers in right-center.
The Diamondbacks went ahead again in the seventh on a run-scoring single by Gabriel Morena before Oswald Peraza tied it in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homer.
