‘The Office’ showrunner addresses revival rumors — and he’s not denying them

“The Office” showrunner Greg Daniels finally addressed rumors that the comedy is making a comeback — and he didn’t downright deny them.

“Well, I think that it’s very speculative,” Daniels said in a recent interview with Collider. “The fact that it kind of blew up based on one line in a puck piece was kind of cool, I guess, in the sense that the fans still care a lot.”

Last month, Puck News reported that Daniels was poised to announce an “Office” revival after the Writers Guild of America strike officially ended. Although the strike ended on Sept. 27, there’s been no news that the Dunder Mifflin crew from Scranton, Pennsylvania, are reuniting.

“The Office” ran for nine seasons from 2005 to 2013 and starred Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, Brian Baumgartner, Leslie David Baker, Angela Kinsey, Kate Flannery, Phyllis Smith, Creed Bratton, B.J. Novak, Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms and Oscar Nunez.

Daniels, 60, opened up about a possible reunion to Entertainment Weekly in 2019.

“We got the chance to end it the way we wanted to end it. It wasn’t like we were interrupted in the middle of a run or something,” he said at the time. “So in a sense it’s completely an artistic whole. But, that said, I don’t know, the cast every now and then talks about getting back together in some form, but I don’t see it being a reboot like the way Will & Grace was rebooted.”

Krasinski, 43, for his part, would be down to reprise his role as Jim.

“The Office was absolutely everything to me,” Krasinski told Esquire in 2020. “I mean, it is my beginning and my end. I’m pretty sure at the end of my career I’ll still be known for Jim. That was my first experience with Hollywood. It was the first creative family I’ve ever had. In many ways, they will always be the most important people in that most important experience in my career. So yeah, if they did a reunion, I would absolutely love to do it.”

Despite the cast loving the beloved comedy as much as fans, Wilson recently revealed that the show left him unfilled.

“When I was in ‘The Office,’ I spent several years really mostly unhappy because it wasn’t enough,” he said during Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast in July.

“I was making hundreds of thousands. I wanted millions, and I was a TV star, but I wanted to be a movie star. It was never enough,” he continued. “I’m on a hit show, Emmy nominated every year, making lots of money working with, like, Steve Carell and Jenna Fischer and John Krasinski and these amazing writers and incredible directors like Paul Feig. I’m on one of the great TV shows. People love it. I wasn’t enjoying it.”

Wilson, 57, couldn’t help but compare himself to other actors in the industry at the time. “I was thinking about, ‘Why am I not a movie star? Why am I not the next Jack Black or the next Will Ferrell?’ ” he added. ”‘How come I can’t have a movie career? Why don’t I have this development deal?’”
