Jeremy Corbyn refuses to call Hamas a terror group in on-air clash with Piers Morgan
Former UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn refused to label Hamas a terror group Monday during a heated interview with talk show host Piers Morgan.
The far-left pol wouldn’t give a straight answer when Morgan repeatedly asked him if the Palestinian militants who launched a devastating attack on Israel last month were terrorists during a “Piers Morgan Uncensored” segment.
“Are they a terror group?” Morgan asked.
“Everybody knows what they are,” the member of Parliament replied to the TalkTV host.
“Are they a terror group?” Morgan asked again. “Can you say it? Can you say it? Can you call them a terror group?”
“Is it possible to have a rational discussion with you?” Corbyn asked in reply as he tried to talk through Morgan’s repeated questioning.
The two continued to clash in a full-out shouting match as Corbyn tried to advocate for a cease-fire while Morgan kept asking about Hamas.
The verbal fracas came to an end when Morgan’s other guest, ex-General Secretary of Unite the Union Len McCluskey, said “Of course” Hamas is a terror group.
“Why can’t you say that?” Morgan directed at an annoyed Corbyn.
Hamas, the ruling body in Gaza, has been designated a terror group by the United States, the UK government and the European Union.
Earlier in the interview, Corbyn “utterly condemned” Hamas’ sneak assault on the Jewish state that left about 1,200 Israelis dead – the latest figure coming after Israel initially reported 1,400 of its people were killed.
“Of course I have, at every speech I’ve made I’ve utterly condemned the killing on October 7th and it was the taking of innocent life. It was totally wrong under any circumstances. You don’t bring back the tragedy of those 1,400 deaths by killing 10,000 in Gaza. You have to have a process that leads to a ceasefire,” Corbyn said, also stating during the interview he does not support Hamas.
The former party leader also said “it’s not up to you or me” if Hamas remains in power when asked if he believes the group should maintain its control over Gaza by Morgan.
Corbyn was suspended by Britain’s opposition party in 2020 for refusing to own up to a damning report about his handling of antisemitism complaints.
The report alleged Corbyn’s office broke equality laws through its “inexcusable” handling of the complaints.
He appeared on Morgan’s show after he attended and spoke at a large pro-Palestinian rally over the weekend where some protesters reportedly chanted antisemitic slogans or held bigoted signs.
He told Morgan in response to the instances of antisemitism, “If they are breaking the law and showing illegal signs, then obviously the police have to act” while also stressing the “peaceful nature” of the demonstration.
