Paul Pelosi hammer attacker planned to wear ‘inflatable unicorn costume’ to break into home: testimony
David DePape planned to wear an inflatable unicorn costume and broke into Nancy Pelosi’s home to speak to her about Russian involvement in the 2016 election, he testified in San Francisco Federal Court Tuesday.
A tearful DePape said his plan was to get the former House Speaker and his other famous “targets” to admit to their corruption and eventually get President Joe Biden to pardon the group.
Instead, DePape found Paul Pelosi at the home and bludgeoned the 83-year old with a hammer since his wife was still in Washington DC at the time of the Oct. 28, 2022 break-in.
“He was never my target and I’m sorry he got hurt,” DePape, 43, said of Paul Pelosi. “I reacted because my plan was basically ruined,” adding he wanted to ask Biden to pardon his targets “so we can move forward as a country.”
DePape said he would listen to political podcasts that supported right-wing conspiracies as he played video games six hours a day.
On one of those podcasts, he heard conservative commentator James Lindsay talk about Bay Area scholar Dr. Gayle Rubin, a leading academic in feminist theory and queer studies.
“The takeaway I got is that she wants to turn our schools into pedophile molestation factories,” he said of Rubin, who has been referred to as “Target 1” in federal court documents.
Rubin also testified on Tuesday and said her writings were misconstrued to fit a narrative against the gay movement.
When asked by DePape’s defense attorney if she supported child abuse, Rubin replied, “Absolutely not.”
In his blog posts that have since been taken down, DePape often wrote about QAnon and unfounded theories that former President Donald Trump was at war with a cabal of Satan-worshiping Democrat elites who run a global pedophile sex ring.
Prosecutors said DePape’s other “targets” included actor Tom Hanks, [Calif. rep] Adam Schiff, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter and billionaire George Soros.
During his shocking testimony on Monday, Paul Pelosi recounted how he was able to call 911 while DePape was preparing to tie him up.
“The door opened and a very large man came in with a hammer in one hand and some ties in the other and he said, ‘Where’s nancy? And I think that woke me up,” Paul Pelosi testified.
He added, “I recognized I was in serious danger.”
Pelosi managed to convince DePape to move from the bedroom to the first floor of the home with the hope that police were on their way.
Once Pelosi opened the door to officers, DePape seized the hammer and hit Paul with it, bodycam video shows.
Pelosi sustained a fractured skull and suffered serious wounds to his right arm and hands in the attack and was hospitalized for a number of days for treatment.
Paul Pelosi has since made public appearances, but his wife said in January he was “making progress, but it’ll take more time,” before he was back to normal.
DePape faces life in prison if convicted of the federal charges of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official in retaliation for performance of their duties.
DePape is also facing an attempted murder charge in a separate state case. He has pleaded not guilty to that charge and is awaiting a trial date.
Gypsy Taub, who was in a relationship with DePape for 15 years and has two children with him, told The Post watching DePape break down on the stand was difficult because he is not usually a very emotional person.
Taub said she believed authorities forced DePape to confess to the atack and seemed unlike himself during his short testimony. She alleges authorities have kept her and her children from visiting DePape since he was arrested in October 2022.
“His testimony lasted about 15 to 20 minutes, but he broke down and cried three or four times,” said Taub, an activist known for her pro-nudity stance. “It was as if he wasn’t even present in the room and sat there, frozen.
“I already had doubts that his confession to police was false because it was only on audio, but I am glad the jury was able to see him testify and will be able to decide on the authenticity of that confession.”
