Woman, 25, found alive after going missing for over a week in the same park man survived off eating tadpoles, drinking from puddles
A 25-year-old Texas woman was found alive in Big Bend National Park after over a week missing, just days after the harrowing details of a man who ate tadpoles and drank from puddles to survive in the same park were revealed.
Christy Perry was missing since Nov. 9 and was found “awake and talking” on Friday morning, according to the National Park Service.
Search teams closed the Lost Mine Trail where her car was located to scour the area on foot and by helicopter.
Her family had reported her missing when she did return from her camping trip.
Perry, who is just five feet two inches tall and 100 pounds, according to a missing poster, was transported to a hospital in Odessa and no other details about her condition were shared.
“We are pleased to report a successful search and rescue operation in Big Bend National Park,” the NPS said in a statement.
“Our highly skilled team, in collaboration with outside law enforcement, has located and safely rescued the missing hiker.”
The trail, which takes about three hours to complete, is in “mountain lion and black bear country,” with steep portions and hot desert sun, the NPS warns.
Last week, Texas Highways magazine reported on the miraculous survival of a man lost in Big Bend, which lies near the Mexico border, back in June.
Jeff Hahn, 59, of Austin, and his 25-year-old daughter Harper Hahn planned to hike just a few miles but got lost in 107-degree temperatures.
He was struggling so the daughter went ahead to find help but when she returned, he was nowhere to be found.
Hahn had wandered in the direction of where he thought help would be.
At one point, he fell and fractured his wrist but landed near a puddle that he stuck his water bottle straw into to sip from.
He later found a stream and used his hat to fish out tadpoles to eat.
The marketing executive was found after 27 hours and spent several days in the hospital but recovered.
Others aren’t as lucky as Perry and Hahn.
In June, a father and his stepson both died in the park, separated after the father went to get water for the 14-year-old who had passed out in the scorching temperatures.
