Patti Smith discharged from Italy hospital after ‘short period of observation in emergency’

Patti Smith has reportedly been released from the hospital in Bologna, Italy, after being forced to cancel one of her shows due to an unknown illness.

The “Because the Night” songstress, 76, was discharged Wednesday night after “a short period of observation in emergency.”

According to the Local Health Authority of Bologna, per the Los Angeles Times, Smith is “in good health conditions” and is expected to return to the stage after “an appropriate period of rest.”

“This is thanking all at the hospital for their help and guidance,” Smith later wrote in an Instagram post. “I am so sorry that we had to cancel concerts in Bologna and Venice. I will return to fulfill my happy obligations.”

“This is also to thank all the medical teams globally, who attend to the people’s needs, especially those altruistically serving under fire, all healers, physicians, nurses, attendants,” she continued.

“Also I want to thank everyone for sending messages of love and concern. I am resting, as the doctor ordered, grateful to have had such care, though being painfully aware that many are not so fortunate.”

The Post reached out to Smith for comment.

In accordance with her doctor’s wishes, Smith has reportedly cancelled her performance in Venice Thursday night and her upcoming Milan show.

Smith had been touring in Italy since late last month.

The “Gloria” singer is expected to return stateside on Dec. 27 to perform at the Chicago venue Salt Shed before closing out the year in New York City with two shows in Brooklyn.

In 2020, Smith got candid about her struggles with her health during the COVID-19 pandemic due to a lifelong battle with a bronchial condition.

“I was a sickly kid, sometimes they were worried that I wouldn’t pull through,” Smith told the Guardian at the time. “I had so much responsibility and a true purpose. To be in limbo almost 10 months, for a person like me who doesn’t like sitting in the same place, it’s been very challenging. I feel like I’m part-wolf, roaming from room to room.”

This past summer, Smith and her band played at Madison Square Garden as the opening act for the rock group, the National.

Smith, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, is also well-known for her book “Just Kids,” which delves into her relationship with iconic photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. It later won the prestigious One Book, One New York designation.

Recently, Smith was nominated to join the star-studded ranks of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and was ranked No. 117 on Rolling Stones’ list of 200 Greatest Singers of All Time.
