Trump says he’ll debate Biden, would spar with GOP rival ‘if it’s very close’ after New Hampshire primary
Former President Donald Trump indicated Friday that he may be willing to take the stage at a future Republican primary debate once there is only one challenger left between him and the party’s 2024 nomination.
Trump, 77, refused to participate in any of the four Republican National Committee-sanctioned forums, citing his dominance in the polls, but the GOP frontrunner told radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt that might change if his lead dwindles while the primary field narrows.
“Yeah, I would, if it’s very close. I would debate that Republican,” Trump told Hewitt when asked if he would join the final Republican in the race after the Jan. 23 New Hampshire primary.
“But it’s not close,” the former president hastily added.
There are no GOP debates currently scheduled to take place after the first-in-the-nation primary.
The RNC announced earlier this month that it would not hold any primary debates in January, but would allow candidates to participate in non-sanctioned debates organized by media outlets.
Nevada, which will hold a primary election on Feb. 6 and a caucus Feb. 8, and South Carolina, which is holding its primary on Feb. 24, are the next nominating contests on the schedule after New Hampshire.
Trump also promised to debate President Biden if both are nominated as their party’s standard bearers, despite his concerns that the organization in charge of running the general election debates is biased in favor of Democrats.
“Oh, will I look forward to that,” Trump said of the prospect of going toe-to-toe with the 81-year-old incumbent. “How about 10 debates?”
“They’re totally corrupt. They’re totally Democrat-leaning … and they’re terrible,” Trump said of the Commission on Presidential Debates, accusing the group of “turning off” his microphone during one of his 2020 debates with Biden.
“With that being said, I would do 20 debates even if it was organized by them,” he added. “I’ll do as many debates as they want. I’d do a debate every night with this guy. But he’ll never show up to a debate.”
