Stetson Bennett may not be back next season after mysterious Rams absence
Stetson Bennett may not return next season.
The Rams rookie quarterback left the team early in the 2023 season and there has been little explanation as to the reason behind his placement on the reserve/non-injury football list.
At his season-ending press conference, Rams coach Sean McVay was asked if Bennett would be back next season.
“I don’t know that,” McVay told reporters. “I think that’s a conversation for another time. I think he’s doing better, but I wouldn’t be in a position to answer that accurately right now. That’s probably a long way away from me being able to answer that.”
Bennett opened the season as the team’s No. 2 quarterback behind Matthew Stafford.
The team promoted Brett Rypien to take Bennett’s place on the roster before ultimately signing Carson Wentz.
Bennett, 26, led Georgia to back-to-back national championships and the Rams took him in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
He was arrested for public intoxication in late January in Dallas.
His place in the draft was always in doubt, given he was older than almost every other prospect.
Bennett had a promising start to the preseason, throwing for 333 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his first two games.
He did, however, throw two interceptions in the preseason finale against the Broncos.
McVay said in late October that Bennett was “doing well,” while admitting it was unlikely he would be back this season.
Georgia honored Bennett at halftime of a Nov. 11 game against Ole Miss, where he appeared in good spirits.
Bennett was recognized for winning the Burlsworth Trophy, which goes to the nation’s top walk-on.
The Rams saw their season end Sunday with a crushing 24-23 loss to the Lions in the wild card round.
