Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dubbed ‘insensitive’ toward Kate and Charles after snapping pic with Jamaican PM
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made a surprise appearance in Kingston, Jamaica, on Tuesday at the “Bob Marley: One Love” premiere.
The “Suits” alum, 42, and the Invictus Games founder, 39, posed with a multitude of public figures including the country’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness, politician Marlene Malahoo Forte and Brian Robbins, the president and chief executive of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon.
But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were labeled “insensitive” for spending time with Holness, an anti-monarchist, amid King Charles and Kate Middleton’s recent health battles.
Holness, 51, previously pushed for Jamaica to separate itself from the United Kingdom, as the nation is one of England’s Commonwealth countries.
Royal expert Phil Dampier told the Daily Mail Wednesday that “it seems Harry and Meghan will turn up at the opening of an envelope these days.”
“Under normal circumstances there would be nothing wrong with them going to a film premiere,” he continued.
“But at a time when his father is going under the knife and Jamaica is making noises about ditching the monarchy, this is rather insensitive,” Dampier added.
Dampier went on: “Clearly the couple felt at home. But it’s sending out a message that they support that country when they haven’t found the time to make a public show of support for the King and the Princess of Wales.”
“They may have done so in private, but they are certainly not going out of their way to say they want a reconciliation, and this appearance emphasizes yet again the different world they now live in.”
It was announced on Jan. 17 that Charles, 75, will undergo a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate later this week.
That same day, news surfaced that Middleton, 42, had entered the London Clinic for a planned abdominal surgery and would not appear at public functions until after March 31.
The Duchess of Cambridge and her husband, Prince William, 41, previously went on a tour of Jamaica in March 2022 that was seen as “highly problematic,” according to royal author Richard Fitzwilliams.
“This is a difficult period for the monarchy with Catherine in hospital and King Charles about to undergo an operation for an enlarged prostate,” he also told the Daily Mail. “The Sussexes have sent good wishes privately. However their appearance in Jamaica clearly sends a message.”
The former actress and Harry did share their well-wishes for Middleton and Charles on Jan. 21.
A source told the Mirror on Saturday, “The King and the Princess of Wales have received support from Prince Harry and Meghan regarding their health. The Duke and Duchess contacted both parties in different ways to express their concern and best wishes.”
