It was over and then — a second later — it wasn’t.
CBS’ Tony Romo had a dubious analysis of Zay Flowers’ crucial fumble at the goal line that cost the Ravens a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
“Every time Baltimore gets something little going, Kansas City shuts it down,” Romo said. “I mean, that’s the game, but it’s not over.”
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy highlighted the commentary on X and called it an “all-time Romo quote.”
Portnoy then mimicked Romo: “That’s the game, not over, but that is the game.”
Within that brief soundbite, the commentary is certainly ludicrous.
The much-maligned Romo did go on to add a little a bit of clarity to the comment and detailed the consequences of Flowers’ costly mistake, which came with the Ravens trailing the Chiefs, 17-7.
“When you look back, it’s a 3-point game,” Romo said after the Chiefs ran a play. “Right now, every play is huge. Now they have to stand up if they want to come back.”
The missed touchdown did end up being the difference, with the Ravens cutting the lead to seven on the next possession, however, it is impossible to know how the game would have unfolded if Flowers had scored.
The rookie receiver had gotten a taunting penalty earlier in the drive after a 54-yard catch, and then cut his finger slamming the bench in frustration after the fumble.
Romo, who is in the middle of a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS, has been under fire with his analysis under the microscope in high-profile playoff games.
ESPN’s Chris Russo slammed Romo last week for confusing the Immaculate Reception and the Holy Roller early in the Chiefs-Bills divisional round game.
And Portnoy was not the only member of Barstool to be critical of Romo on Sunday.
“Greg olsen >>>>>>>> Romo,” PFT Commenter tweeted in response to former Giants lineman Geoff Schwartz complimenting Olsen’s work on FOX during the NFC Championship game.
PFT Commenter then highlighted a slew of Romo defenses from one account and intimated that it could be a burner.
“Jim i dont know who this could be jim ehhhhhh I dont know,” he wrote.
Play-by-play man Jim Nantz and Romo will be on the call for Super Bowl 2024 in Las Vegas on Feb. 11.Â
