Police probe grisly mystery after human fetus washes ashore in Miami Beach
A Florida beachgoer made the shocking discovery of a human fetus that had washed ashore — in what police called a “very unique case” that sparked a death probe.
Miami Beach police responded Tuesday afternoon after the person spotted the remains of the unborn infant and notified Miami Beach Ocean Rescue, WSVN reported.
The medical examiner later removed the fetus to conduct an autopsy.
“Due to the elements, the location as to which it was discovered, there are a lot of unknowns at this point,” police spokesperson Officer Christopher Bess told the outlet.
“Therefore, a medical assessment will better guide us as to how old the fetus was, but based off of our observations, it does appear to be a fetus,” he said.
“It does not appear to have been birth but again, these are all speculation at this time,” Bess said.
“It is a very unique case,” he told the Miami Herald.
Police said there are many unknowns, including who the mother is.
“We don’t know what the mother’s part — if she played a part in this. We don’t know if this was a possible miscarriage,” Bess told WSVN.
Beachgoers said they were alarmed by the discovery.
“I think it’s horrible, it’s horrifying,” one person told the outlet, declining to be named.
“Yes, it’s shocking. I can’t believe it,” added another, who also wished to remain unidentified.
