Caitlin Clark received a lot of support from those in the sports world for her big achievement on Thursday night, from Tom Brady to college rival Angel Reese.
But those closest to her also didn’t hesitate to show her love for becoming the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball in No. 4 Iowa’s 106-89 win over Michigan, surpassing Kelsey Plum’s 3,527 points.
Connor McCaffery, Clark’s boyfriend and former Iowa basketball and baseball athlete, posted a video on his Instagram story of Clark’s record-breaking long 3-pointer in the first quarter that solidified her name in atop NCAA women’s basketball history books.
“So proud,” he wrote on top of the video. “Love you 22.”
The couple’s relationship became public in August of 2023 when Clark shared a series of photos of them cuddling together on a boat with the caption, “Best end to summer.”
McCaffery, the son of Hawkeyes men’s basketball head coach Fran McCaffrey, also recently shared a post for Clark’s 22md birthday on Jan. 22 that included five photos of the couple and a cute caption.
“Happy Birthday 22. Wish I was there to celebrate with you – you deserve the best day. Golden Bday/T Swift year will be the best yet,” he wrote. “With all that you’ve already accomplished, there is so much more in store for you and your special self. I admire you in every way and I love you.”
After graduating from Iowa, McCaffery worked for the Indiana Pacers as a team assistant last year where he helped with scouting, film study, and more, according to the Des Moines Register.
Outside of her new record – which she only needed eight points to earn – the star Iowa point guard finished the game with a program record 49 points along with 13 assists, giving Clark a new total of 3,569 college career points.
“I don’t know if you could script it any better,” Clark said. “Just to do it in this fashion, I’m very grateful and thankful to be surrounded by so many people who have been my foundation in everything I’ve done since I was a young little girl. You all knew I was going to shoot the logo 3 for the record.”
Iowa has four remaining regular season games before hitting the Big Ten tournament that is seeing a heated race between the Hawkeyes, Ohio State, and Indiana.
In the upcoming weeks, Clark has the opportunity to pass Pete Maravich as well, who currently holds the all-time Division I record with 3,667 points.
