2024 MLB odds, win totals: Oakland A’s given historically low over/under

Oddsmakers are anticipating a miserable year for the Oakland A’s.

After losing an MLB-worst 112 games in 2023, Vegas bookies are pegging the team for a historically low 56.5 wins (Caesars Sportsbook) this season.

That number is the lowest preseason win total for any team since at least 1990, according to Sports Odds History.

The A’s are just the seventh team since then to have a preseason over/under below 60, joining last year’s A’s and Nationals, the 2021 Pirates, 2019 Orioles, 2013 Astros, and 1993 Marlins – all but Washington lost at least 98 games in their respective seasons.

Sportsbook projections for this season are a full ten wins fewer than any other season for Oakland since 1990, succeeding the 1996 A’s, who were set at 66.5 wins.

The A’s are coming off their worst season during the Oakland era (since 1968) and the second-worst in franchise history, eclipsing only the 1917 Philadelphia Athletics, who lost 117 games.

Oakland is easily the favorite to finish the 2023 season with the worst record at FanDuel Sportsbook (+150).

The Colorado Rockies (+230), Chicago White Sox (+470) and Washington Nationals (+850) are the only other teams with odds better than 25/1.

They are +25000 at FanDuel to win the American League West, +20000 to win the AL pennant and +50000 to win the World Series.

The franchise is, of course, not doing so well off the field, either.

A’s ownership has cut payroll and failed to upkeep the crumbling Coliseum in recent years, leading to fan protests and plummeting attendance as they look to move the team to Sin City.

The drama-filled Las Vegas relocation process has the franchise questioning where it will call home after the lease with the Oakland Coliseum runs out following the 2024 season.

All involved are hoping – if a deal can finally get done – that the team’s new Las Vegas stadium will open before the 2028 season.
