ST. LOUIS — The Islanders did not practice Wednesday, so there was no official update on Casey Cizikas’ status, after the center took Erik Karlsson’s shot off his hand early in the third period Tuesday night.
But the subtext of moving Hudson Fasching to long-term injured reserve while calling up Kyle MacLean from AHL Bridgeport very much points in the direction of Cizikas missing Thursday’s contest against the Blues.
MacLean has already spelled Cizikas in the lineup this season, with a successful seven-game stint after a lower-body injury forced Cizikas out of the lineup in the middle of January.
Moving Fasching to LTIR, retroactive to Jan. 25, allowed the Islanders to open up a roster spot for MacLean while retaining flexibility.
Since Fasching was moved retroactively, he has already missed seven of the 10 games required before coming off LTIR, with the mandatory 24-day period having passed. He did not make the trip to Pittsburgh and St. Louis due to coming down sick in addition to his lower-body issue, though he has practiced with the team recently. The earliest he can be activated is against the Red Wings next Thursday.
Unless Cizikas is going to be out long term, that represented the path of least resistance for the Islanders to get another center on the roster — a necessity after former coach Lane Lambert’s experiment in splitting up Bo Horvat and Mat Barzal the last time Cizikas got hurt went poorly, with Lambert getting fired shortly thereafter.
New coach Patrick Roy gave MacLean a strong review after he was sent back down to Bridgeport having scored his first NHL goal in Toronto before Cizikas rejoined the lineup.
“I think he has a future with us,” Roy said. “No doubt in my mind. It’ll be up to the organization to decide when he’s ready or not, but I think he does have a future with our team.
“He played really well. I felt like he was very reliable, he played really well defensively.”
Zachary Bolduc, who played two seasons for Roy’s Quebec Remparts from 2021-23, is set to make his NHL debut for the Blues on Thursday night against the Islanders.
St. Louis coach Drew Bannister told reporters Wednesday that Scott Perunovich will be a game-time decision with a lower-body injury.
