Rex Heuermann ‘not capable’ of Gilgo Beach serial killings, his estranged wife says

The estranged wife of Gilgo Beach serial killing suspect Rex Heuermann said Wednesday he is “not capable” of carrying out the four slayings he’s accused of committing.

Asa Ellerup, who filed to divorce Heuermann just days after his July 2023 arrest, said that she was giving her husband of 27 years “the benefit of the doubt, as we all deserve” in a statement through her attorneys.

“I will listen to all of the evidence and withhold judgment until the end of trial,” Ellerup said, adding that she extends her “heartfelt sympathies” to the women known as the “Gilgo Four” that her husband is accused of killing.

“Nobody deserves to die in that manner.”

Ellerup also claimed she has visited Heuermann on a weekly basis at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead since his arrest, which a Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said was not an accurate description.

“We have record of Asa Ellerup being logged into the facility 7 times,” Victoria DiStefano confirmed to The Post.

Ellerup filed for divorce just six days after Heuermann was arrested in July and charged with the brutal murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello.

Heuermann was also indicted in January of this year for the slaying of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.

The “Gilgo Four” — all of whom were sex workers — were discovered on the Long Island beach in December 2010.

Six other bodies were found along the remote stretch of Long Island during the same timeframe, many of which have been attributed to the Gilgo Beach serial killer, but have not been officially tied to Heuermann.

The case went cold for several years until former NYPD chief Rodney Harrison, who was Suffolk County police commissioner at the time, reopened the case in January 2022.

Heuermann was tied to the case within a year after officials tied his DNA to the victims’ bodies.

The Manhattan architect and father of two has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
