2 escape unscathed after small plane spirals out of sky with parachute deployed in Florida, wild video shows
Two people narrowly escaped from a small airplane that deployed its parachute as it spiraled down into a Florida backyard on Thursday.
“I looked up to see that it was an airplane with a parachute whirling down about to crash into the ground,” said Sheri Catrett, of Brandon, who filmed the plane’s spiraling descent when she heard a “loud explosion sound” around 3:20 p.m.
The footage shows the plane slowly falling while its parachute was deployed above.
When Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, they found two people unharmed inside the upside-down plane, according to a statement.
The passengers were “transported in stable condition to a local trauma center,” the department said.
The plane’s parachute got caught in a tree, which may have prevented it from hitting power lines, the rescue team added.
The plane — a single-engine Evektor Harmony two-seater — had taken off from Tampa Executive Airport just five minutes before the crash, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The aircraft, which was registered in late February with Skyhawk Leasing LLC, completed two flights earlier in the day.
