LSU running back Trey Holly avoids murder charge after shooting arrest

LSU’s Trey Holly won’t face an attempted murder charge in connection to a Feb. 9 shooting, according to multiple reports.

The running back was facing three felony charges as one of three people arrested for the incident in Farmerville, La., where a man was shot in the leg and a woman was left in critical condition after suffering three gunshot wounds.

Holly was arrested on Feb. 19 after turning himself in to authorities, and the 19-year-old was facing the three charges that included second-degree attempted murder.

On Friday, a Union Parish grand jury charged Holly with one felony count of illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentality, rejecting the attempted second-degree murder charge.

According to his lawyer, Michael Small, Holly plans to plead not guilty.

“We look forward to trial before a fair and impartial jury in Union Parish after which I am confident that a verdict of not guilty will be returned,” Small said, per The Advocate.

Throughout the process, Holly maintained his innocence, claiming he was “falsely identified, accused, and arrested,” as he wrote in a social media post in February.

LSU immediately suspended Holly after his arrest, and he was not with the team during spring practice.

“I am 100% innocent and the people that know me know this is not my character at all. I was not involved in the incident at all. I was at home which is where the incident took place,” Holly wrote on Feb. 17. “I turned myself in because I was notified of an arrest warrant and I wanted to fully cooperate. Due to this being an ongoing investigation I cannot give many details.”

Last season, Holly tallied 110 rushing yards for a touchdown across 11 carries in three appearances, and he earned the SEC Freshman of the Week honor once.

Prior to committing to LSU, he was a four-star recruit — after compiling a Louisiana-record 10,523 career yards at Union Parish High School, according to ESPN — ranked by the outlet as the No. 172 overall recruit in 2023.
