Filip Chytil practicing as Rangers playoff lineup questions loom

Filip Chytil remains on track in his recovery.

The Czech center continues to fully participate without any restrictions in the Rangers’ practices and morning skates, including Tuesday’s skate ahead of Game 2 of their first-round series against the Capitals at Madison Square Garden.

It’s an encouraging sign after the 24-year-old suffered a setback in his recovery from a suspected concussion in his second day on the ice with the team back in late January.

The longer Chytil skates without any issue the more promising it becomes he’ll return to the lineup at some point this postseason.

“Any time a player is out there and being pushed in practice and drills, they’re probably getting better conditioned, a better feel for the puck, better feel for game-like situations,” head coach Peter Laviolette said Tuesday morning. “And so, for me, it is noticeable that he looks good out there. He looks comfortable.”

Laviolette said before the playoffs started that he would no longer be confirming personnel or lineup changes, so the first sign of Chytil’s return would be when he starts taking legitimate line rushes.

That has yet to happen, but he continues to rotate in occasionally and push his pace during battle drills.

It’ll be interesting to see how Laviolette navigates having Chytil waiting in the wings during such an important time of year.

Should this Washington series go well, will Laviolette feel comfortable making a personnel change like that in the second round?

There will be a myriad of factors to consider when making this decision, but the Rangers have made it clear that Chytil’s health remains the priority.
