Former ‘Supernatural’ co-stars DJ Qualls and Ty Olsson reveal that they’re engaged
Carry on, wayward sons.
“Supernatural” co-stars DJ Qualls, 45, and Ty Olsson, 50, have revealed that they’re engaged.
Qualls announced the news on his Locked and Probably Loaded podcast with Kelly Blackheart.
“Ty and I became inseparable at the very beginning, just immediately,” Qualls shared.
“And over the last 10 years our relationship evolved to what it is today, and now we’re getting married.”
Qualls played the werewolf Garth on the long-running CW drama, which ran from 2005 to 2020 and also starred Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins. Olsson played the vampire Benny.
The two men are the third couple to meet on the show: Padalecki met his wife, Genevieve Cortese, when she appeared on the show, and Ruth Connell and Rob Benedict, who had a daughter this year, also met on the series.
On Thursday, Olsson posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Thank you everyone for all the love and support and kindness today :) sending you all some love and hugs.”
Qualls came out as gay in 2020.
Olsson was previously married twice, to his first wife, Leanna Nash, with whom he shares two daughters, and his second wife, Katherine Lohmeyer, whom he was married to from 2019 to 2021.
The couple said they met at a convention for the show, and they “didn’t know each other at all” before that.
“We maybe said three words together at the Supernatural convention, and then we went to London for four or five days afterward,” Qualls said.
“And then I was going to Turkey with a friend — and he is such a pure, awesome guy. He came up to us — we all went out as a group — and he was like, ‘Can I come on your trip with you?’” he recalled.
“And I’m like, ‘That is so ballsy!’ I could never invite myself on somebody’s trip. ‘Cause I’d be afraid they would begrudgingly tell me yes and then not want me there. But it was just so pure and awesome, and that’s who he is,” he continued. “I didn’t know him. And it was the beginning of our friendship.”
Qualls went on to describe Olsson as one of the “most wonderful” people he’s ever met.
“It’s just so crazy that this person who was just my friend, now I think about all the time and he sends the best messages, and he supports me and loves me unconditionally in the right way,” Qualls said.
He said that he believes unconditional love means, “you treat that person with some respect and their best interests are your best interests,” and he said he feels like he found that with Olsson.
“Ty was the first person in my entire life, my entire life that [I] ever had that with,” Qualls said.
“[He is] the best friend I ever had, and now we’re going to be old men together, which is so crazy.”
