NYPD cops fatally shoot ‘emotionally disturbed’ man who charged them with knife: police

Cops fatally shot an “emotionally disturbed” man who charged at them with a knife in Brooklyn early Sunday — an hour before officers crashed their patrol car into a different violent suspect, police said.

The officers involved in the fatal shooting were finishing up a domestic-violence call in the Bushwick neighborhood around 2:20 a.m. when a man tapped on their car window to get their attention, police said at a press conference.

After stepping out of the vehicle, the officers saw the 26-year-old wielding two knives, and when he ignored their orders to drop the weapons, they deployed their tasers, the NYPD said.

The man the fell to the ground, dropping one of his knives before standing back up and charging at the other officers with the other knife, police said.

Both officers fired their guns at the man, fatally striking him, cops said.

The dead man has not yet been identified.

The officers were also brought to a hospital for examination

“When it comes to emotionally disturbed people, we do everything to deescalte, but sometimes it doesn’t work out the way we want,” NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell said Sunday.

About an hour later, around 3:30 a.m., police from Bronx Narcotics assigned to a summer violence reduction zone witnessed a fight unfold in front of a store in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Detectives saw a man pointing a gun at a woman and chased the suspect on foot, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard said.

Responding officers tried to cut off the man with their vehicle, and there was a collision between them, injuring the suspect, police said.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. His condition was not immediately clear.

“These detectives were assigned in Brownsville for gang violence, summer violence. They were exactly where they were supposed to be and probably prevented a shooting,” Sheppard said.
