Brandon Nimmo doesn’t care who gets the credit.
The Mets earned their sixth straight victory after a 14-2 win against the Texas Rangers on Monday at Globe Life Field and some have noticed that the winning streak has coincided with the first pitch of a lovable McDonald’s character.
Following the team’s latest triumph, SNY reporter Steve Gelbs asked Nimmo how much credit he gives to Grimace — who threw out the first pitch at Citi Field before the Mets’ 10-4 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday — for their recent success.
“Whatever it is, let’s keep it going,” the outfielder told Gelbs.
The Mets’ offense has been on fire since Grimace made his mound appearance and that includes a resurgence for Nimmo, who had been “off” according to Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza
“He’s off,” Mendoza said prior to last Friday’s series opener against the San Diego Padres. “He’s going through a stretch here where it’s not easy for him.”
However, in the team’s last four games, the seven-year veteran has gone 10-for-17 at the plate with a pair of extra-base hits and seven RBIs.
Nimmo went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs in Monday night’s victory that included 22 hits, the team’s highest total in five years.
Francisco Lindor — who matched a season-high of four hits — went 4-for-4 with three singles, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.
“It’s been [Martinez] the past few days, but I like what I have been seeing from some of the other guys,” Mendoza said. “We knew with this offense we were capable of putting together some games, obviously today was a special one, but one through nine there’s some real good hitters.”
Pete Alonso was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and DJ Stewart hit a three-run homer to left field — his first homer since April 30.
The Mets, who are now 34-37, continue the series against the Rangers on Tuesday night.
