Mets broadcasters troll Michael Kay after ‘best booth’ rant

The Mets’ SNY crew came up with their “best” retort to Michael Kay.

On Wednesday afternoon, Kay, the Yankees play-by-play man on YES Network, went on a lengthy diatribe on his eponymous radio show over the fact that SNY advertised on the program and labeled the Mets broadcasters the “best booth” in major league baseball.

Kay, who feels strongly about his Yankees crew, took exception to the advertising on his show, which airs on ESPN Radio and is simulcast on YES Network.

“I mean, do you just expect me to take that lying down? I think our booth is the best booth in baseball,” Kay said.

So, on Wednesday during SNY’s telecast of the Mets’ 12-2 dismantling of the Yankees to complete a two-game Subway Series sweep, that broadcast trio had some fun during a lengthy rain delay, seemingly at Kay’s expense.

“I met one of the young Yankee broadcasters for the first time, Emmanuel Berbari, he shares the radio job now with John Sterling having retired,” play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen said. “So, he came over and said hello and that was nice. … Very talented young broadcaster.”

“How does he feel about our show?” analyst Ron Darling asked.

“Uhhh I don’t think he really had any opinion,” Cohen responded.

But that’s when Keith Hernandez came in with some playful shading of Kay.

“I heard it was the best rain in Major League Baseball,” Hernandez said of the downpour that enveloped Citi Field, making clear reference to the “best booth” rant.

“I think it’s time to play some baseball,” Cohen said after laughing a few times.

This came as Kay, on his X account, shared a similar sentiment.

Before the “best rain,” SNY’s main X account posted a photo of the SNY triumvirate with the caption: The best booth in baseball.”

Kay, for his part, told The Athletic before the start of the game that he wanted to hash it out with the crosstown broadcasters.

“I’ll go up there and I’ll give them a hug, maybe a kiss today,” Kay told the outlet. “I don’t think it’d be awkward at all, because I’m not saying they’re bad. I’m just saying that, to say that they’re the best — well, who says?”
