Assassination attempt guarantees Trump’s return to White House, political guru says: ‘Race is over’
The attempted assassination of Donald Trump all but sealed his victory at the polls in November, Clinton campaign veteran Dick Morris said Sunday.
Trump’s escape from death with courageous bravado comes as some Democratic heavyweights have called for President Biden, 81, to bow out of the presidential race because of mental and physical issues.
“Functionally, the race is over,” Morris said on his WABC podcast. “[Trump] wins if he lives. … There’s nothing that can get into Trump’s path except a bullet.
“As grizzly as it sounds, this assassination attempt didn’t succeed in killing Trump, but it probably succeeded in killing the Democratic Party’s chances this year,” Morris said.
He said the top priority of Trump, 78, and his campaign team now is to take more precautions — such as speaking behind a shield — to protect the Republican nominee.
The bounce for Trump and the Republicans during their nominating convention in Milwaukee this week could be 10 to 15 points in the polls, Morris predicted — a lead that would be all but impossible for Biden and bickering Democrats to overcome.
Voters are going to see the iconic image of a bloodied Trump with his fist in the air after getting shot in the ear, Morris said — likening it to the Marine Corps World War II Iwo Jima Memorial statue.
“It was just amazing … This will go down in history,” Morris said of Trump’s actions immediately after the shooting. “It’s going to bolster him in the polling, obviously. The question is how much and what impact.”

Meanwhile, Democrats have been dispirited, with 20 congressional party members “jumping ship” and urging Biden to not seek re-election and to pass the torch to someone else for a chance at defeating Trump. A defiant Biden insists he will be the party’s standard bearer.
Morris said this week could be a very bad week for the Democratic Party.
The political pundit has represented both Democrats and Republicans and in recent years has championed Trump, including in his 2022 book, “The Return: Trump’s Big 2024 Comeback.”
